Introduction to Professional Committee of Pharmacometrics of China, Chinese Pharmacological Society

Professional Committee of Pharmacometrics of China (PCPC) is one of the branches of Chinese Pharmacological Society (CNPHARS). PCPC was founded in 1979 by Professors Ruiyuan Sun and Zhengjun Jin. Since then, this multidisciplinary discipline has been receiving a great deal of attention by the research community during the past more than twenty years. The research focuses of the members of PCPC include exposure-response (PK-PD) modeling, population PK/PD, clinical trial simulation, novel clinical trial designs based modeling, biomarker, disease model, trial model, M&S methodology, drug-drug interaction, calculating software and traditional Chinese medicine quantitative methodology, etc. The current president is Professor Bingxiang Yuan.

The main functions and important historical events of PCPC are as follows:
Academic Conferences: More than one hundred academic conferences have been sponsored by PCPC. In total, more than three thousand attendees participated in these conferences. Conference topics included drug development and regulation sciences, model-based drug development, bridging strategies to support global drug development and clinical policies and guidelines on clinical trials and drug evaluation and approval.
Monographs: In 1987, the first monograph written by Prof. Ruiyuan Sun, 鈥淨uantitative Pharmacology鈥, was published by People鈥檚 Medical Publishing House. It has been welcomed by scholars in various fields and has deep influence on the pharmacology research in China. In 2004, Professors Sun and QingshanZheng co-edited a new monograph 鈥 鈥淣ew Concepts of Mathematical Pharmacology鈥, which introduce a wide variety of new concepts and methods on current research issues in recent years. There are other more than twenty related monographs on pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, pharmacostatistics, clinical trial design, and so on.
Professional Softwares: PCPC developed more than 6 softwares, which include 3P87/3P97 and DAS, the most commonly used pharmacokinetic and pharmacostatistical software in China. Compared with other powerful international softwares, like WinNonlin and NONMEM, they have their own features and convenience.
Novel Quantitative Methodology: In addition to many traditional methods, Chinese scientists also developed some novel widely used new quantitative methods and models, such as LD50 calculation method named after professor Ruiyuan Sun.
Professional Journal: In 1996, Chinese Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics was launched. This journal makes a commitment to a regular column dealing with the quantitative pharmacology methodologies.
Pharmacometrican Training: In 1978, the first research institute of quantitative pharmacology was set up in Wannan Medical College (Anhui Province). Today, some universities provide postgraduate courses of quantitative pharmacology, such as Wannan Medical College, Anhui Medical University, Shanghai University of Chinese Medicine, Xi鈥檃n Jiaotong University, Fudan University and Peking University.
Workshops: On September 2009, the serial workshops of quantitative pharmacology research methodology was launched by the Center for Drug Clinical Research of Shanghai Traditional Medicine University.
Drug Development Regulatory Policy: PCPC have helped China State Food and Drug Administration (China SFDA) establish lots of new drug development regulatory policies and guidances, such as 鈥淕uidance for industry: Biostatistics of new drug development鈥.
International Communication: On the 10th international pharmacology conference in 1987 held in Sydney, Australia, Prof. Ruiyuan Sun gave the presentation titled 鈥淒evelopment Trends of Quantitative Pharmacology鈥, systematically introducing the research status of this discipline in China. In 2007, the first international symposium on quantitative pharmacology in drug development and regulatory sciences was held in Nanjing, marking the first time scientists from around the globe gathered to discuss topics related to QPharm in Asia. The journal of clinical pharmacology of America reported it in detail. In 2009, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals Limited set up research institute of Quantitative Pharmacology in Shanghai, and cosponsored 鈥淧eking University-Pfizer Quantitative Pharmacology Training Center鈥 with Peking University. 鈥淨uantitative Pharmacology and Model-Based Drug Development International Conference鈥 was held in Beijing in the same year.

Drug development continues to be expensive, time consuming, and inef?cient, while pharmacotherapy is often practiced at suboptimal levels of performance. The application of quantitative pharmacology principles to drug development and pharmacotherapy will signi?cantly improve both. Efforts in China are at an early stage, but it is clear that Chinese scientists embrace the discipline and are keen to promote this methodology in drug development in China. While China has become one of World鈥檚 most important emerging markets in many industries, the pharmaceutical business is yet to bloom. In the near future, it can be anticipated that China will be integrated into global drug development and approval, and PCPC will play an increasingly critical role and foster this advancement in the near future.
